I learned a long while back, “where attention goes, energy flows”. When you put attention on something, it grows. It’s my intention to grow this blog and write about what I learn and I invite you along for the journey.  As of today it’s been 3 months since I’ve been blogging and wow have I learned a ton.

Ever since I had an NLP coach re-pattern my mind to ‘love the numbers,‘  it’s been a fun journey learning the mathmatical, analytical, data side of things. If you’re an artsty type, very creative and naturally don’t care about the numbers, please do your best to enjoy the pretty graphs and see where it applies to you.

1. Where are people coming from?

You can easily find out what country, even what city people are reading your blog. I thought because I had networks in 3 states, that my writing would stop there, oh was I wrong. I got traffic from over 37 states and 44 countries. It’s a pretty cool feeling to experience when I saw that.

2. How do people find me?

You can also see how you generate most of your traffic. I get the majority of my traffic from referring sites in blue because right now I use Facebook and Twitter to get the word out. The direct traffic in green is when people directly type your url into their browser. Search Engines in orange is when people find you based on key words and your ability to SEO well.

3. Have I made any progress?

You can also compare one month (or period of time)  to another on any paticular set of data. Here is my first month compared page views to my third month. This isn’t overly meaningful to me, but when you start to run campaigns and various tests to see what works best, this will be an invaluable way to measure and track data.

4. Do people keep coming back for more?

One other thing you can find out is how frequently do people visit your blog. This may or may not apply to the purpose of your blog, but it’s good to know you can find it. I know only 56% of my visits are one time, but that leaves 44% have returned at least two times.

I do wish there was one way that I could delete my own page views/visits. I’m pretty sure I check my blog a little obsessively which would skew my data, but if I’m reading it right, I’m not the only one. Maybe I have a stalker? Maybe I’m way off in interpreting the data. If you know, please educate me you SEO super stars.

5. How much time are people spending on my site?

One last Google Analytics trick is to see the average time people spend on your site. My average visitor time on site is 2 and a half minutes and I know that the days I blog, I’ll have the blog open for more time, like on April 10th you see I had average over 7 minutes, that may also be because its a video blog, or because people leave their browsers open in a second tab. Whatever the case may be, Google Analytics also reports any changes in this, like -3.5% or +15% (again very useful for various campaigns).

I hope this has been informative and interesting. It’s really important for you to understand that every time you Retweet or Reshare someone’s article, video’s, etc you’re really paying it forward and helping them build awareness of their material. I’m very thankful for the people who reshare and helps the content go viral. My blog about the 5 love languages was shared 20 times in the first 2 days, that’s when you know you’re on to something. Some of the Super blogs like Mashable get 1000+ reshares and reweets.

I enjoy writing and even if people didn’t enjoy it, I’d keep writing because someone out there will find value in my work, and the same is true for you. Thankfully for me, people keep coming to my site, along with people from other countries whom I’ve never met. So, THANK YOU!

I’m definitely open and very curious to hearing what you’re learning about tracking your blog online. I’m 3 months into this journey and this blog serves as a visual history in my mind. I may not understand it to the fullest, but I sure am having fun.

Finally I want to leave you with this quote from Mary Kay Ash, “There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened.”  Which will you be?

Cheers to you on your blogging journey ~ Marcelle
